We were excited to have a special guest Carla Esparza, a former RUHS wrestler, at the event!
"Where it all started🤼♀️! It is such an incredible honor to have the 1st Redondo girls wrestling tournament named after me, “The 1st Annual Carla Esparza Classic at Redondo Union High School”! It was so amazing to see all of the girls teams wrestling at this tournament🥹, when back when I wrestled, you’d be lucky to find 1 girl on a boys team. It all started for me over 20 years ago when I took a chance and stepped on the wrestling mat for the first time and fell in love with the sport. I look forward to being apart of this tournament for years to come!! It’s the only girls varsity tournament in the South Bay, so hoping every local team participates in this awesome tourney next year."

Carla Esparza is an American former professional mixed martial artist and wrestler who most recently competed in the women's Strawweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in which she is the former two-time UFC Women's Strawweight Champion.
Carla Esparza's path to mixed martial arts (MMA) began when she started wrestling for the varsity team during her junior year at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California. After winning multiple regional and national high-school wrestling tournaments, Esparza was awarded a scholarship to Menlo College, a NAIA Division school in northern California, to wrestle under coach and former two-time Olympian Lee Allen.
