"Dear Redondo Wrestling Families,

As we begin the season, we want to take a moment to explain the difference between USA Wrestling tournaments and CIF high school wrestling events, since both opportunities may come up for our athletes.

CIF High School Wrestling (RUHS Team Competitions) * Governed by CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) rules and regulations. * All matches and tournaments are scheduled through RUHS and count toward the wrestler’s official high school season. * Participation requires being cleared through RUHS Athletics (physical, GPA, and eligibility). * These events determine league standings, postseason qualification, and ultimately who advances to CIF, Masters, and State.

USA Wrestling Tournaments (Optional, Outside of CIF Season) * Sanctioned by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling. * Open tournaments where wrestlers may compete as individuals against athletes from other schools, clubs, or regions. * To enter, wrestlers must purchase a USA Wrestling membership card (annual fee) for insurance and eligibility. * These events do not count toward CIF high school records but are great for gaining extra experience, especially in the off-season.

Why This Matters * CIF events are mandatory and directly tied to our high school wrestling program. * USA Wrestling tournaments are optional but highly encouraged for athletes who want additional mat time and competition opportunities outside of the school schedule.

If you have questions about how to get a USA Wrestling card, upcoming tournament opportunities, or how these events fit into your wrestler’s development, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
